Our history
Through the years, GIST Impact has evolved from its non-profit origins into a leading provider of impact data and intelligence, harnessing the power of impact economics and technology to discover the full value contribution a business makes to the world.
-
2008
GIST Impact was founded in 2008, with a vision of a sustainable tomorrow: a world in which humans live in harmony with nature and enjoy the benefits of a green and equitable economy of permanence; a world in which people measure and value what matters.
-
2009 – 2012
In our early years, we delivered multiple country-level studies on green accounting for governments and international bodies, including the United Nations.
Our founding team led pioneering studies such as TEEB (The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity – 2008) and conducted award-winning research.
-
2013 – 2014
We defined the space of impact economics alongside leading organisations such as the Capitals Coalition and the International Integrated Reporting Council, and worked on dozens of global projects such as the very first integrated profit and loss explorations – for companies like Akzo Nobel, BASF and Tata Chemicals – and the first full-spectrum impact evaluations of food system sustainability – TEEBAgriFood and related studies.
-
2016 – 2018
In the years that followed, we worked with leading businesses, harnessing the power of impact economics to understand the value contribution they were making to the world, including Amata, Soneva Group, Yarra Valley Water, Sveaskog, and many more.
-
2019 – 2021
We recognised that to scale our early successes and achieve our vision, we needed to leverage the power of technology and big data.
We built and continue to evolve the world’s first impact valuation engine, which combines company-level data with hundreds of thousands of location-specific impact values derived by our R&D teams using algorithms and formulae constructed and refined over a decade and a half from sound science and robust impact economics.
-
2023
Today, we are the go-to provider for high-quality impact data and intelligence, and are proud to call some of the world’s largest investors and companies our clients and partners.
